Driving Exam Services

The state of Texas requires all driver license applicants to pass the DPS Road Test - also known as the Driving Exam - in order to obtain a Texas Driver's License.
A&K Driving Austin is authorized by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) as a Third-Party Skills Test site.
You may sign up for the DPS-approved Driving Exam through our driving school in order to apply for your Texas Driver's License.

Driving Exam - What to Know

The Driving Exam is conducted by a licensed examiner who directs each student through the approved Test Route.

The Driving Exam score is based on the student's performance in the following areas:

Control- student's ability to properly operate the vehicle
Observation- student's ability to properly interact with traffic, abide by road signs/regulations, and maintain safety
Positioning- student's lane management skills and performing proper turns and stops
Signaling- student's proper use of turn signals when required

Additionally, students will be tested on:

parallel parking
safely reversing the vehicle
perpendicular parking

NOTE:

The Examiner grades every student based on the criteria and standards set by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). Examiners are not required to pass a student based on "driving experience" alone.

All Driving Exam applicants must show proficiency in the areas highlighted above in order to pass their Driving Exam.

As a Third-Party Skills Test Site, we require ALL (both teens AND adults) student drivers to have a valid Texas Learner's Permit in order to sign up for a Driving Exam.

A Driving Exam is considered an automatic FAIL if the student driver-

Violates traffic laws
Dangerously impedes traffic
Refuses to follow instructions

The Texas Department of Public Safety has a new service that allows for online submission of road test paperwork and driver license application documents.
When you complete your road test through A&K Driving Austin, we can assist in uploading all driver license application documents to the TxT Submission Portal.

NOTE: **NOT available for Teen Drivers -- Teen Drivers are required to meet at the driving school location for their road test ;
a parent / guardian MUST be present to sign-off on the road test paperwork.

If you need additional driving practice before attempting the official Driving Exam, you can sign up for any of our
Driving Exam Packages that work best for you.

We offer a variety of package options for either Beginner / Inexperienced or Intermediate drivers.
Driving Packages allow students to purchase and schedule multiple Driving Lessons at a discounted rate.
Driving Lessons can be scheduled out at your own pace based on our upcoming availability.

NOTE: The following Driving Packages do NOT count towards completion of a Texas Teen Driver Education course.

Prep & Exam Package

One-hour Driving Lesson that serves as "Test Prep." This is not a fully in-depth instructional session. Students are expected to demonstrate proficiency in vehicle operation and maneuvering safely. The lesson mainly focuses on refining road test skills and driving along the test route as additional practice.
The Driving Exam may be scheduled immediately after the Prep Lesson or at a later date.

3 Hours & Driving Exam Package

Three (3) one-hour Driving Lessons that serve to build up on basic maneuvering skills.
This package is generally recommended for students who have moderate driving experience and are looking to obtain additional practice on more "advanced" skills -- highway / freeway driving, road test skills, main roadways with heavier traffic, etc,.
If additional practice is needed or preferred, students have the option to upgrade to our 6 Hours & Exam Package.

6 Hours & Driving Exam Package

Six (6) one-hour Driving Lessons that serve to establish basic maneuvering skills and safe driving habits.
This package is generally recommended for students who have little-to-no experience driving -- whether it's their first time
behind-the-wheel of a car, or they have only attempted driving a handful of times.
If additional practice is needed or preferred, students have the option of requesting additional lessons to be added to their package.
